SHOPS are cashing in on the forthcoming royal wedding.

They are selling a wide range of pre-nuptial souvenirs, from good-quality products to some truly tacky trinkets.

Some stores have decorated their windows with Union flags and red, white and blue bunting for the big day on Friday (April 29).

Herald staff went browsing in the town for collectables on sale.

In addition to the obligatory tea towels and printed cushions, they found thimbles and spoons bearing photographs of the happy couple. Also fridge magnets, an 8-inch bone china plate and paperweights.

Oddest curio was a pack of playing cards at £1.99. Most tacky was an ashtray at £1.99. The most expensive item was a pair of champagne flutes at £89.

The Lido gift shop sold out of commemorative mugs and teaspoons in a flash, and there was also a run on hand-held flags for those wanting something portably patriotic.
