Butcher given knife wounds in robbery

Raiders stole hundreds of pounds in cash and cut a shopkeeper’s fingers with a knife when they robbed a Lancing butchers.

Kenny Peckham had been counting up takings at Natural Meats butchers, in Manor Road, when he went into another room to get a vacuum packing machine for the money.

The cash had been left behind on a bench in the shop, and when Kenny returned he found two men in the shop, with one by the door and another behind the counter.

When Kenny challenged the men about what they were doing, the man behind the counter picked up a knife and threatened him.

As Kenny approached him and tried to grab the blade from the raider his fingers were cut by the intruder.

The two men then ran from the shop with the takings – hundreds of pounds in cash .

The attack left shop manager Kenny so shaken up he had to close the shop for the day on Thursday.

He has since left his role at the shop.

Ed Middleton, managing director of parent company Natural Farms Limited, described the attack as “upsetting”, “surprising” and “random”.

He said to his knowledge nothing similar had ever happened at Natural Meats butchers before.

He said: “It’s very surprising because Lancing is quite a quiet and pleasant residential area.

“It does seem like a bit of a random event.

“It’s a little bit upsetting because it’s a small shop and it doesn’t do huge quantities of business, so this kind of incident can really put people’s jobs at risk.”

The incident happened at around 8am on Thursday.

Those with information about the crime should contact police on 101.
