PARISHIONERS are urging people in Worthing to help save a church from being closed for good.
The parochial church council is seeking closure of St Botolph’s Church, in Lansdowne Road, because of falling congregation numbers and the need for expensive building repairs.
In the past week, public consultation documents have been displayed inside the church, and at Worthing Library. Representations need to be made by April 16.
However, people who attend the church believe they should have been consulted before now.
Cathy Elliott, on behalf of the congregation, said: “The momentous decision to propose the closure was taken with little public consultation.
“We know the future of the church has been discussed for the past two years, so why are our views only being sought now, at the 11th hour?”
The parishioners have set up a petition against the closure, and are urging people to help save the listed church by making their views known in writing to Rex Andrew at Church Commissioners, Church House, Great Smith Street, London, SW1P 3AZ, or by emailing email@example.com
