MILITARY personnel are being encouraged to attend the funeral of a Second World War veteran.

Patrick Murphy was rear gunner of a Lancaster, otherwise known as a ‘tail-end Charlie’ during the war. He reached the rank of flight sergeant.

His role was to protect aircraft from fighters and keep lookout for any approaching aircraft.

Patrick does not have any close family living nearby that can attend his funeral.

Dickie Dore, a Royal Air Forces Welfare Officer, said: “He was so proud to be the tail-end Charlie.

“Any local RAF or military personnel would be most welcome to give him a fitting send off.”

Patrick’s funeral is taking place at 1.20pm, at Worthing Crematorium, on Thursday.
