Amelia Santana, 32, of Carisbrooke Drive, is hoping to have a Calisthenics park built at the Northbrook Recreation Ground in Romany Road.

Calisthenics are a variety of exercises intended to tone the body and increase body strength, and include bending, jumping, stretching and swinging.

Sit-ups and crunches are also considered an important part of the exercises.

Amelia has started a Change campaign online, which so far has raised nearly 200 supporters, to help raise awareness of the park.

Amelia, who recently exercised by pole dancing, said: “When I moved here to the UK I could not really find a gym so I started looking for a park like this, but realised we don’t really have them in the UK compared to other places in Europe. And so I thought how people might enjoy them.

“These types of parks help me and they are quite challenging, but fun. A lot of people I know have been talking about the problems of exercising, because not everyone likes to use the gym. And I know there is nothing else.

“So far, the campaign has had a positive response and it is very good to exercise outside.”

The estimated cost of the park is currently unknown, although they are considered a cheaper alternative to the gym due to lack of equipment required.

The ground proposed currently consists of a sports pavilion, two football pitches, and a play area, but Amelia believes there is the potential to do more with the park.

A spokesman for Worthing Borough Council thanked the Herald for notifying them of the petition.

The council said Andy Edwards, head of environment, would welcome a meeting with the petition organiser to discuss the proposal in more detail.
