IAN HART: There is still time to do the right thing

Unfortunately, last week I was informed that a family who I had previously looked after had been the victims of a theft from their little boy's grave in the Children's Section at Durrington Cemetery.

In life, everyone makes mistakes. Some are trivial, some major. But, almost certainly, all of us do something in our lives we shouldn’t.

However, to my mind, stealing from a child’s grave, or in fact any grave, is actually off the scale. It almost defies description.

Through social media, the message has got out. The local media has also helped, but sadly a week on and no response.

I don’t think the perpetrator can even comprehend the hurt and pain their actions caused – quite simply the items stolen are, due to sentimental reasons, irreplaceable.

I am very privileged to write the column and am constantly buoyed at the amount of feedback I receive from the readers.

Therefore, using effectively one more throw of the dice I’m going to make one final appeal in this column.

The three toys stolen were a red London bus and black taxi, both with a Hamleys logo, along with a police Mini.

If the person who took them is reading this, or someone else knows who did, there is time, as the headline says, to do the right thing.

You can either return them to Durrington Cemetery or if you feel you can’t do that leave them in my yard behind my office at 92-94 Broadwater Street West, Worthing, in a carrier bag.

My dear old mum, who died a year ago this weekend, always said there was a little bit of good in everyone.

Hopefully, even on this occasion, she was right.
