ROTARY ROUND-UP: Busy month for West Worthing club

As the Rotary year progresses there is now much planning for the coming year as president-elect John Bayley, who is taking over from president Sue Virgo, puts in place his team and his plans in readiness for when he succeeds her in July.

Meanwhile there is much going on.

A ‘Night at the Races’ saw excited punters gather at St Mary’s Church Hall, Goring, in anticipation of a night of betting against the odds.

Rotarians took their role as horses on an improvised track, moving as the dice was rolled and cheered on by those who had bet on the races at the tote.

Gary Barnes compered the night on the microphone, moving things along at a jolly pace.

It was all rounded off with a tasty fish and chip supper followed by delicious trifle.

The evening raised £585.50 for Safe in Sussex and other Rotary charities.

What is called our ‘frugal meal’ proved to be a misnomer when we were served chicken pie and lemon meringue pie with a difference at the Guild Care Bradbury Wellbeing Centre.

The Rotarians pay their usual hotel rates with the difference in costs, along with the proceeds of a raffle, going to Guild Care funds.

The Bradbury Centre offers people with dementia the opportunity to take part in crafts, go on outings, listen to live music and have cinema screenings.

On site there is also a hairdressing salon where they can enjoy a beauty treatment.

The centre is also able to support carers with advice, guidance and specialist respite care.

Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) residents raised the bar at this month’s darts match beating the Rotarians in three straight matches.

Some good scoring but we just couldn’t match them.

Well done QAHH who hold the trophy again with a 2-0 lead.

Can we redeem ourselves next month?

West Worthing Rotary Club members dusted off their dinner jackets for a gala ‘President’s Evening’ at the Findon Manor Hotel.

It is the club’s way of extending their appreciation for commitment to duty shown by the president, Sue Virgo, over her year and at the same time enjoying an evening of fellowship with club members and guests.

Looking to the future, there is the Indoor Charity Boot sale organised by Durrington High School Rotary Interact Club tomorrow (April 23) to raise funds for Mary’s Meals and Chestnut Tree House.

It starts at midday for sellers and 1pm for buyers.

May weekend also sees the annual Three Forts Challenge Marathon on Sunday, May 1, when about 700 runners will tackle either a 13 or 27-mile marathon race to take them round Iron Age hill forts on the South Downs: Cissbury Ring, Chanctonbury Ring and Devil’s Dyke.

The marathon includes a total climb of 3,450ft as the course dips and rises up and then down to almost sea level as it crosses the Adur River twice.

The organisation of the event involves the input of four Rotary clubs (Worthing, West Worthing, Worthing Steyne, and Steyning & Henfield) with over 40 Rotarians turning out from 6am on the day to help to organise and marshal the event, assisted by local running clubs and with the help of the St John Ambulance Brigade, who provide first aid.
