A convicted burglar who fled from HM Prison Ford has been returned to custody after handing himself in to police, a spokesperson has confirmed.

James Cable, 33, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for offences committed in the Arun district on December 10 last year at Lewes Crown Court, the spokesperson said.

But in October this year he absconded from HMP Ford and was listed as wanted, said the spokesperson.

Cable contacted police shortly after 5am today, after several weeks on the run, to say he was at Lancing railway station and wished to hand himself in, according to the spokesperson.

Officers attended and Cable was arrested on suspicion of escaping from lawful custody, said the spokesperson.

Anyone with any information about absconders can contact Sussex Police on 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting Sussex reference Operation Parcel.
