Man admits to hammer attack

A MAN has admitted to attacking a cyclist with a hammer in a road rage attack in Worthing.

Samuel Brownson, 20, of Ambersham Crescent, East Preston, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Chichester Crown Court on Thursday, January 5.

Brownson had been travelling along Gratwicke Road at about 4.14pm on Wednesday, September 7, last year when 60-year-old cyclist Peter Strutt collided with his Vauxhall Nova saloon.

A dispute followed, during which Brownson went to the boot of his car, took out a hammer and struck the man on the head with it.

The cyclist was treated at Worthing Hospital for cuts to his head but was later discharged.

Brownson had originally been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, but denied the charge, which was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Brownson will be sentenced at Chichester Crown Court on January 25.
