A FIERCELY independent man who was told on his birthday that he had cancer shot himself so he could die with dignity.

An inquest held at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (July 12) heard how Michael Savill, 74, of Georges Lane, Storrington, committed suicide on April 23, 2011, as he did not want to die in a hospice.

Assistant coroner for West Sussex Michael Kendall said: “Regrettably, this is a straightforward case. I think the evidence is overwhelming. Because of his medical condition the deceased took his own life.”
