Worthing stores caught selling alcohol to under-age customers

THREE off-licences and stores in the Worthing area have been caught selling alcohol to under-age customers.

The Police Licensing Team have been carrying out undercover operations using children aged 16 who were given authority under the Licensing Act to buy alcohol from premises and test whether the staff are diligent enough to refuse the sales.

Among the off-licences caught selling alcohol to children were 74 Convenience Store, Goring Road, Allsorts in Montague Street and Seven Eleven in Heene Road.

The offences have been dealt with by way of fixed penalty notices and summonses to Worthing Magistrates’ Court. Police are currently dealing with the premises supervisors to ensure correct staff training and other preventative measures are implemented.

Sergeant Simon Morgan of the West Sussex licensing team said: “It is an offence to sell or allow the sale of alcohol to a person aged under 18. Sussex Police expect the supervisors of these stores to take responsibility and ensure that sales of alcohol are not made to juveniles.

“Sussex Police will ask the council to review the licences of poorly managed premises, asking for revocation where necessary.”
