A WORTHING woman has been spared jail after fraudulently claiming over £6,500 in council tax benefit and housing tax benefit.
Lisa Ford, of London Street, Worthing, pleaded guilty to furnishing false documents and failing to notify a change of circumstances at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 21).
Ford, 28, failed to tell Worthing Borough Council that her husband, Craig Ford, 28, was a company director of Just Medical Recruitment, and he was in receipt of income from his position.
As a result, Ford received £6,164.44 Housing Benefit and £365.67 Council Tax Benefit, making a total of £6,530.11 of means tested benefits which she was not entitled to.
She was sentenced to a one year community penalty order, with a condition of 100 hours unpaid work attached to it.
Ford was also ordered to pay £400.00 towards prosecution costs.
On sentencing, the magistrates stated that this was a reasonably serious offence and there was a significant amount of undisclosed income.
Worthing Borough Council will be seeking civil recovery procedures for the total amount of these overpayments.
