Four-year-old working cocker spaniel/cross breed collie, Maisie, owned by Kate Davies, 16, scooped first place in the medium dogs KC novice cup, while 21-month-old German Shepherd Lia, owned by Julie Fowler, claimed second place in the good citizen dog scheme.

Worthing College student Kate had tried to enter Crufts for the past six years with different dogs. Maisie came first in jumping and second in agility to claim the overall top spot.

She said: “The atmosphere was electric in the main arena and to do so well is just amazing, I’m very proud of Maisie.

“Maisie was a 13th birthday present and she’s always been wonderful. She can be quite sensitive sometimes but she was so confident out there.”

Julie, of Westergate Close, Ferring, is a veteran of the world-famous dog show, having trained dogs since the 1970s.

She said: “It felt good, Lia deserved it. She is very sweet natured. She kisses everybody. I take her everywhere she’s a good companion.”

Lia’s father, a dog called Elmo, also appeared at this year’s event in Birmingham’s NEC and, according to Julie, is ‘the best German shepherd there is’.

Lia, whose competion name is Slatehouse Natalia, qualified for Crufts by winning a competition in Bournemouth last August.

This year’s Crufts attracted dog owners from 45 countries.
