Black-and-white pictures add historical ‘colour’ to school celebration

A WORTHING primary school celebrated its 125th anniversary with a step back in time.
Pupils and teachers at Heene First School dressed up in full costume for their Victorian-themed school day, which featured a traditional Victorian assembly and classroom desks set out in rows.
Year-two and three boys and girls were separated for lessons and break time, and all pupils took part in outside drills instead of their usual PE lessons.
The day also featured a theatre group production of Oliver Twist, and the presentation of a cake baked by a former pupil – who has now gone on to become a top-class pastry chef.
To document the day, head teacher Dianne Bonthrone’s husband, Andrew, donned the role of photographer, taking black-and-white pictures with a box camera.
Mrs Bonthrone said: “The children really enjoyed the day – in fact some of the girls said they preferred having girls-only playtime. A lot of the children enjoyed the drills at first, but then they did say they preferred their own PE lessons!” She added: “During the assembly, I read out the logbook entry from the same date 125 years ago, to get a feel of how the school day would be.
“The children really enjoyed it.
“It was a great learning experience for them, especially to highlight what little rights Victorian children had in comparision to today.”
