TALENTED pupils from a Broadwater school have become chess champions.

A team from the chess club at Broadwater First and Middle school have won the Sussex School Champions title in the under seven, under eight and under nine age groups.

Four of the pupils played for the Sussex under-nine team who won the National Championships this year.

The popular chess club is led by parents Carol and Dave Graham.

Dave said: “I think club is so popular because chess is a very interesting game and captures the imagination of creative children and those who enjoy logic and pattern based games.

“The competitive element also helps with opportunities to play individually, part of a team and in many different competitions such as the UK Chess Challenge or with Sussex Junior Chess.”

Janet Sharp, the school’s principal, said: “This has been such a wonderful opportunity for a group of children to really shine.

“We are indebted to Mr and Mrs Graham for their wonderful support and work with the chess club.”
