Sir Robert Woodard Academy hosts first performance
AN ACADEMY is to host its inaugural performance in its controversial new theatre.
The Sir Robert Woodard Academy came under fire by former students and teachers angry at the decision to knock down the school’s theatre, built in memory of a former head of drama, Alan Strong.
A Facebook campaign, entitled Save the Alan Strong performing arts building, was launched in August, 2010, after news the theatre would be demolished and replaced by playing fields.
Former pupils were particularly angry as the drama teacher’s ashes were scattered in the foundations of the arts block.
However, to make sure Alan’s memory survived, the academy took the decision to name the new theatre after the popular teacher.
Vicki Dillon-Thiselton and Katie Scott, vice-principals at the academy in Upper Boundstone Lane, said: “His memory still lives in the community.
“To name the new performance space, the Alan Strong Theatre is the right thing to do.
“We are here to bring a first-class education fit for the modern world to the young people of Lancing and Sompting but we know we are standing on the shoulders of great teachers like Alan.”
The first public performance in the theatre will be a modern re-working of an old classic, Frankenstein, performed by the theatre company, Big Brum.
Frankenstein will be performed on Thursday, January 19, at 7pm.
