Tropical fruits at Ferring school
A TASTE of Africa can be found in Ferring, thanks to tropical fruit trees grown by schoolchildren.
Youngsters at Ferring Primary in Sea Lane have been busy growing tropical fruit tree species, identical to those grown as part of a special project in Malawi, which grows a tree for every ton of aluminium drinks cans recycled in the UK.
The children held a group fruit-tasting session to discover the flavour of fruits grown in Malawi and then used the seeds to plant their own trees, including avocado and mango.
A year on, the children's trees are thriving and they have collected an excellent 40 kilos of clean aluminium foil so far which will be counted towards growing trees in Malawi.
Zo Walker, a teaching assistant, said: "The whole school community is contributing to our foil collection and the pupils have enjoyed watching the plants developing in the classroom.
"Money from the recycling of the foil is passed to the Guide Dogs for the Blind."
