Fury over plans to restrict dog walking in Worthing

DOG owners have been angered after hearing council plans to reduce the number of areas where dogs can be walked in Worthing.

Worthing Council is proposing to introduce all five types of dog control order within its jurisdiction, including exclusion areas and on-lead restrictions.

If passed, dogs will be prohibited from entering areas such as Highdown Gardens, Heene Terrace and Brooklands Golf Facility, as well as seasonal exclusions along stretches of the seafront.

Owners will also have to keep their dogs on leads at all times in specified areas, such as Denton Gardens, Beach House Park, Field Place and Palatine Park.

This week, dog walkers told the Herald they had found out about the proposals only through a letter from the The Kennel Club.

Dog owners have only until April 8 to have their say on the dog control order consultation.

Sonia Constable, 68, began telling fellow dog walkers about the proposed dog orders after she was informed by The Kennel Club.

“The council has not made these proposed changes public enough, they’re covering up an unpopular plan and not giving people enough opportunity to object,” she said.

Caroline Kisko from The Kennel Club said: “Dog control orders are becoming more common as councils attempt to find ways to control dog fouling and rein in irresponsible dog owners.

“Unfortunately, this often means responsible dog owners are also penalised and have to suffer restrictions.

“Frequently, public consultations come and go without the majority of the public knowing about them or having a chance to have their say.

A council spokesman said: “The council is engaged in statutory consultation on the proposed new dog orders which seeks to get a balance use of the open spaces both for those with and without dogs. The consultation is designed to get the views of both dog and non-dog owners.”

Representations should be made in writing to Jeremy Cook at Worthing Council, or by email to jeremy.cook@adur-worthing.gov.uk. The consultation closes on April 8.
