Mr Wells was sitting in his garden star-watching when smoke was spotted billowing from the area of the industrial estate.

“I drove around to check to make sure everything was OK and saw a car was on fire, along with surrounding bushes and the tree it was parked under,” he said.

Mr Wells called the fire service but they were already on their way and arrived while he was still on the phone.

The blaze was put out by firefighters and police were called over the incident.

Mr Wells said the burned-out car was a Vauxhall Corsa.

“There were concerns a further abandoned and unlocked car that was parked next to it might catch alight, but the fire service dealt with it promptly,” he said.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the car was believed to have been stolen.
