The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system is designed to make parking ‘smoother and easier’ for motorists, according to a council spokesman.

Wendy Knight, communications officer for Adur and Worthing councils, said: “The introduction of the new equipment is because the former equipment was old, unreliable and failing.”

Tickets will no longer be issued at the High Street car park. Instead, number plates will be read electronically and the barrier will raise automatically. The barrier lid will then turn green indicating it is safe to enter.

Motorists will be required to enter their number plate at a pay station before going back to their car. Once completed, they should drive to the barrier and wait for it to turn green, before leaving the car park.

The system will be rolled out at Grafton and Buckingham multi-storey’s in due course.
