Family fun at college farmyard open day

The college farm welcomes visitors to meet farm manager John Hutcheon, tour the farm, feed the animals, learn about rearing livestock, grazing and farming practice, forestry work and conservation activity.

Visitors can also listen to short talks about farm life, eat a meal of the produce at the farm barbecue, and watch demonstrations by a local blacksmith, woodcarver, spinner and bee keeper.

A representative of the South Downs National Park Authority will be on hand to answer questions.

Lancing College Farm is set on 70 acres of the 500-acre Lancing estate in the South Downs National Park.

Visitors can feed pigs and poultry, handle rabbits and guinea pigs, see chickens, chicks in incubators, sheep, lambs, ducks, geese, quail, rabbits, goats, alpacas and llamas.

About 50 lambs are born on the farm every year.

The fleece from the alpacas, llamas and sheep on the farm is donated to various spinning guilds and clubs in exchange for wool for the college to use.

An exhibition of artwork by Lancing College sixth-form students is also being held at the college on the same day, from 11am to 12pm as part of Steyning Arts Trail.

The exhibition is held in the Megarry Room Foyer and continues until June.

Admission to both events is free of charge.
