Firefighters tackle out of control bonfire

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze today (Monday, August 1) after a bonfire grew out of control.

A fire engine was called to First Avenue, Worthing, at 4.05pm today after a bonfire spread from one square metre to 10 square metres.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but whitewatch crew commander Mark Upperton said the fire was a reminder to people to be careful about bonfires.

He added: “It’s worth reminding people that they should keep bonfires to one square metre, and they should be at least three metres away from structures or vegetation, as they can catch.”
