FOOTBALL: County League round-up (September 2)
NINE-man Lancing Football Club crashed out of the FA Cup at home on Saturday in what Lancers' boss Martin Gander described as a "flattering" 4-1 victory for their Zamaretto League opponents Slough.
Lancers missed out on 1,500 prize money and a place in the first qualifying round, as Slough, who finished with 10 men, scored two late goals to put an unjust tint on the scoreline.
Lancing's Dan McLoughlin was sent-off with the score at 0-0 for retaliating to a two-footed tackle from Adam Logie, which put Lancers in a tough position from the off.
Gander said: "The sending-off totally changed the game, playing 10 on 11 for that long is tough.
"It was a really good cup-tie, though, and we took the game to them. I couldn't have asked for any more. I don't think the score was a fair reflection at all or does us much credit. At 4-1, we look well beaten and that wasn't the case."
The first Slough goal came on 26 minutes, a free kick was met by Chris Seeby, who headed home.
Lancers' Lee Garnham then fired wide when well placed, before Logie struck home Slough's second on 33 minutes from 20 yards.
Garnham did pull one back on the stroke of half-time, though, heading home from Chris Hibberd's cross.
After the break, Slough's Sean Sonner was sent-off for a foul, before Lancing's Michael Sims got his marching orders for an alleged elbow.
As Lancing pushed for an equaliser, they were caught at the back and Garnham scored an own goal on 82 minutes, before Yiadom Yeboah got the fourth late on.
LANCING: Evans; Mighall, Hibberd, Sharman, Hemsley; Elliot, Hayward, McLoughlin, Garnham; Sims, Turner. Subs: Annis (Hayward 70, Joseph (Hemsley 75), Gibbs (Turner 88).
Worthing United exited at the same stage, 3-0 at Ryman League Division 1 South Walton Casuals.
Casuals took the lead on the half-hour mark and, although United had decent chances through Joe Stokes and Ryan Hudson, Casuals doubled the lead on the hour and then made it 3-0 20 minutes from time.

United manager Dominc Di Paola said: "We played well, they're a good side with some quality players, and I'd like to think that if we had been at full-strength, the result could have been different.
"They definitely deserved to win, but 3-0 flattered them a bit.
Everyone was up for it, we all enjoyed it, and the difference was that they turned their chances into goals. Before the game, we believed we could beat them, and although it didn't happen, we enjoyed the day."
UNITED: Phillips; M.Hand, D.Di Paola, S.Di Paola, Biggs; Stokes, Rayner, Shelley, Hudson; Jones, Ghent. Subs: Young (Biggs 75), Peters (Jones 80), Hunt, Miller.
Resilient defending proved the key for Storrington FC in Saturday's 1-1 draw against East Preston in County League Division 2, although they might have snatched all three points.
Manager Ricky Hamilton admits his side were outplayed, but praised their "roll your sleeves up" attitude to winning the point.
An own goal 15 minutes from time looked like it might even send the Swans on to a surprise win, but Gerry Manning's 84th minute header picked up a point for the visitors, sparking delirious scenes on the sidelines.
Manager Hamilton said: "It was a good result for us. I think we got something we should not have done on Saturday, but then again, we have had games where we have deserved something and got nothing.
"We almost nicked three points, and it was almost too good to be true. I was pleased with the way we battled and worked hard as a team.
Although we didn't get up to the standard we have been playing to, we still grafted and rolled our sleeves up. Sometimes it's nice to not play all that well and get something out of it."
EP created the better chances throughout, but a few glaring misses and some smart goalkeeping from Gary Elliott kept them at bay.
So, it was something of a surprise when Storrington went ahead after making a double substitution.
Jake Cockerton and Dan Meason combined well shortly after their introduction and fed John Rhodie whose driven ball into the box was deflected in off a defender.
East Preston responded by making changes of their own, and cranked up the pressure on the home side. That pressure finally told six minutes from the end. A cross from the right wing was met by Manning who planted a free header back across goal, wrong footing Elliott.
STORRINGTON: G.Elliott; McCall, S.Elliott, Carter, Rhodie; Cooke, Maymon, Watton, Humphries; Grantham, Martin. Subs: David (Cooke 55), Cockerton, Meason (Maymon, Martin 70),
A late winner from TD Shipley's Mark Cave denied Ferring a share of the spoils in a tight match in Division 3.
Ferring had fallen behind on 12 minutes through a superb Christien Barrett volley, but then had several chances to equalise.
Josh Gibbons hit the post and later had a strike ruled out, before Simon Corona levelled 20 minutes from time. That appeared to be enough to earn a draw, but Cave then ran through and finished with two minutes remaining.
Ferring manager Craig Stuart said: "The performance was very pleasing, we matched them throughout and deserved a draw.
"This is a tough league and a steep learning curve for the boys. We rolled most teams over with ease last year, but that won't happen this year."
FERRING: Redhead; Cranford, Gibbons, Christodoulou, McKenzie; Rogers, Bryans, Cave; Nally, Gettings, Corona. Subs: Warr (Cranford 60), Charman (Rogers 65), O'Reilly, Slater.
