Richard Elwood, of Alinora Avenue, Goring, made the gruesome discovery as he tended to his garden on Saturday morning.

The fox had a single wire embedded in it, with a wooden plate on the end, leading him to believe it had been deliberately killed.

He said: “I think it was barbarically killed. It must have been an horrendous death.

“I like foxes but I know they attract mixed feelings. But there are ways of dealing with the problem.”

Mr Elwood reported the incident to the police, council and the RSPCA.

The council attended shortly afterwards to collect the fox and disposed of it.

The RSPCA were unable to examine the body as a result.
