A FORMER Worthing woman has started fund-raising to build a school next to an orphanage in Malawi.

Nikki Luxford needs to raise £27,000 to complete the project, which will educate more than 300 children living in the orphanage next door.

The 25-year-old journalist, who now lives in Spain, will travel to Africa in February for five weeks.

She said: “Most years I look to go away and volunteer in a foreign country instead of having a ‘regular’ holiday. I volunteered in South Africa in 2010 on a conservation and community project and loved it, and wanted to go and volunteer somewhere that would show me ‘real’ Africa.

“I found a project in Malawi that seemed exactly what I was after - going back to basics with no proper water, no electric and basic food supplies cooked on an open fire, while living and volunteering with the locals in Malawi.”
