The 31-year-old German defender was promoted into the Bundesliga with Paderborn in 2013-14 and now hopes to reach the top-flight of English football with Albion.

He has helped the team record back-to-back wins and clean sheets since returning to the side, after Shane Duffy was ruled out for six weeks with a broken metatarsal.

On any similarities between Paderborn’s promotion-winning season and Albion’s campaign so far, he said: “With Paderborn, it was a bit more of a surprise because no one expected us to be there at the top.

“After we came close here last season, everybody expected us to be at the top, so we have had to cope with the pressure and we’ve done it really well so far. Now it’s up to us to go one step further and get into the Premier League.”

On reaching the Premier League, Hunemeier added: “When I came to Brighton, it wasn’t really my goal because the season before, the team ended up close to the relegation zone.

“But after my first season here last year, you could see what the club is made of and of course it would be a big dream of every one of us to get to the Premier League.”

Albion have been handed a injury boost for tomorrow’s game at Leeds, with captain Bruno declared fit.

The 36-year-old came off midway through the second half in the 3-0 win against Derby County on Friday with a slight groin injury but Seagulls boss Chris Hughton said he will be fine for this weekend’s fixture.

Sebastien Pocognoli is still ruled out with his groin injury, while Gaetan Bong is continuing his rehab work and could return to training next week. New signing Vegard Forren is still getting up to speed.
