Memories of Queen's visits to Worthing

In 1951, when she visited as Princess Elizabeth, I was 12 years old.

I remember, along with other children from various groups, standing on guard along the kerb side opposite the town hall where she was visiting and saw her depart. Even at that age, I felt very honoured and excited to see her.

On her latest visit in 1999, I stood out on our patio and waved to her as her helicopter flew very low over our garden as she left Durrington High School. I do hope she saw me, as I could see them.

I have always been interested in the Royal Family, especially the Queen. My father took my brother and I up to London, early on the Milkman’s train, to see the coronation which was so exciting.

There was a well organised street party in Ringmer Road for her Silver Jubilee. Also we were very fortunate to be invited to the Mayor’s Golden Jubilee party, in Steyne Gardens, which was a wonderful occasion.

Long may she reign.
