A new plan for Worthing's Teville Gate site
REVISED plans for the Teville Gate site redevelopment – without a swimming pool – are expected to be submitted later this year.
A replacement pool for the Aquarena was part of the original application for the twin-tower homes and leisure complex on the key 3.26-acre site.
But the council eventually decided it could not afford the pool leasing terms offered by the developers, Hanson Capital Management, and is now considering a pool site elsewhere on its own land – probably near the present Aquarena.
James Appleton, the council's executive head of planning, regeneration and wellbeing, told the Herald: "The developers are still keen on progressing the development of the site, and we are in contact with them."
The original application also included a multiplex cinema, 24-lane ten-pin bowling centre, 750-seat bingo club, shops, restaurants and bars, in addition to 250 new homes.
A start on-site was planned for late 2006, but extended and unsuccessful negotiations over providing an eight-lane pool for public use were among factors leading to the delay in seeing an end to this eyesore at Worthing's main gateway.
