Adur grandmother's anti-nuclear protest
A GRANDMOTHER is preparing to take part in a year-long blockade of a Scottish naval base which houses nuclear-armed submarines.
The Faslane base, near Glasgow, is home to four Trident submarines capable of delivering eight times the destructive power of the bombs which obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in Japan, in 1945.
Moyra Martin, of Shoreham, will join other activists from around the UK to close the base for two days, on Sunday and Monday.
She said: "I am aware that taking part in this action may lead to arrest – ironically, for breach of the peace – but I feel compelled to do what I can to make the world a safer place for my grandchildren."
The two days Moyra will spend in Scotland will be part of a planned year-long civil resistance initiative aiming to shut down the Faslane base for a year, from the beginning of the month to the end of September, 2007. Groups take part for two days, before handing over to a new set of peaceful protesters. Within the first three days of the protest, 13 women had been arrested. All were released without charge.
Moyra, treasurer for the Adur Green Party, added it was important to highlight the cost of the Trident programme, especially when the NHS was in the grips of a crisis both nationally and locally, at Worthing and Southlands hospitals.
She said: "I find it very strange that we can be planning to spend as much as 76billion on our immoral Trident fleet at the same time as we are seriously considering cutting back on essential emergency health services."
