ALL THREATENED LOCAL POST OFFICE BRANCHES TO CLOSE

THREATENED sub-post office branches WILL be closed down, despite massive opposition to the plans.

When the closures were announced in November, 2007, councillors and MPs led the the fight to save the nine branches.

Within days of the consultation process beginning people began their protests.

In December more than 200 people turned out to two packed public meetings in Sompting and Lancing, to fight for their post offices.

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton expressed his fury at move.

Mr Loughton, who organised marches against the proposals and raised the matter in Parliament, branded the consultation a farce and called on the Government to reverse the decision.

He said: "This news is another bitter blow to my constituents. I am appalled that the Post Office appears to have stuck two fingers up to thousands of customers in Adur and Worthing, and indeed the whole of Sussex, who will now struggle even more to access dwindling post office services."

Mr Loughton added the Post Office had halved the number of sub-post offices in his constituency without any idea of how the remaining branches would cope.

He said: "The whole of Sompting and Lancing especially has suffered a body blow condemning a population on near 28,000 effectively to rely on one main post office which is already struggling to cope.

"It is shameful that the Government is standing by and letting this happen and can only result in losing even more business to the competition such that no one can be assured that we have even seen the end of the cuts."

Branches facing the axe are:

Worthing: The Parade in Broadwater Road, Downlands in Upper Brighton Road, Heene Road and The Strand.

Lancing: Bowness Avenue (Sompting), North Lancing, and South Street

Shoreham: Upper Shoreham Road, West Beach on Shoreham Beach
