Anger at new Worthing homes

SHOCKED residents of Bolsover Road, Worthing, are still coming to terms with the news a 40-home apartment block is to be built on their doorstep.

The retirement complex will be built on the sites of four houses which have just been demolished, opposite Worthing College.

After the original Churchill Homes application for the flats was turned down in 2007, the residents thought the matter was dead and buried.

Now, they are complaining bitterly that the borough council has given permission for the flats without any proper consultation with neighbouring residents.

But a council spokeswoman told the Herald on Tuesday a second application had been made that year, which was considered in 2008 and given conditional approval.

She said conditions for the approval, including a Section 106 agreement, were only finalised in March this year.

And as the development had already been approved in principle, there was no need for further consultation with neighbours.

All this, however, is cutting no ice with the Bolsover Road objectors.

Vivienne Silverthorne said: "The outlook from my property will be hugely impacted, not to mention the extra traffic, including emergency service vehicles.

"And the well-loved Field Place Park will also have its outlook changed drastically.

"I am very concerned about how this will affect the street that I live in."

Her sister-in-law, Sue Shepherd, who lives two doors away, said: "We objected to the original application, but no signs were put up to say the application had been resubmitted, and there was no two-way consultation.

"It is all so awful. We were only told after the deal had been done."
