Anti dog mess campaign stepped up with court appearances

The campaign to rid the streets of Hastings of dog mess stepped up a gear this week with a string of irresponsible dog owners hauled before the courts.

Hastings Borough Council launched a controversial poster drive earlier this month which used asterixed out swear words to hammer home the anti dog mess message.

And on Friday a trio of owners who ignored the calls to clean up after their animal were due to appear at Hastings Magistrates Court.

James Stenning, 19, of Forest Way, and Paul Capon, 28. of Grove Road, failed to show up but were found guilty in their absence of failing to clear up their pets. They both received a 100 fine, will each have to pay 198 in costs and a 15 victim surcharge.

Eileen Boggins, 52, of Willingdon Way, St Leonards, admitted failing to keep her dog on a lead in a public area. She was fined 50, ordered to pay 50 costs and a 15 victim surcharge.

Councillor Phil Scott, head of environment, said: "I hope the message is finally getting through to irresponsible dog owners that we will take action if you let your pet foul the pavement and don't clear up after it.

"The public is fed up with it and we will prosecute you."
