Award for Worthing community project

PRESTIGIOUS recognition of its community value has been gained by the St Paul's Centre in Chapel Road, Worthing.

At the annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards for 2010, held last week, the new centre received a "highly-commended" certificate in the category of public and community projects.

This category is for excellence in restoration or new projects which provide improved facilities for the community.

The judges praised architect Chris Richardson, main contractor Cheesmur, and the St Paul's Charitable Trust for sensitive and imaginative creation of this community centre in a Grade II* listed redundant church building.

St Paul's re-opened in October, 2009, after a 13-year programme of repairs, renovation and reordering work costing more than 1.2 million.

The money was raised from fund-raising, donations, grants and legacies.

Interest in the centre is growing as a venue to hire for events and performances, as well as a place to enjoy a variety of group activities, such as the Lime Caf, and the quiet of the chapel.
