Battle to save the planet starts in Steyning

AN environmental group has asked Steyning Parish Council to support its bid to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent this year.

Geoff Barnard and Sophie Goodall gave a presentation on behalf of the Steyning 10:10 group at a council meeting on Monday, February 8.

"The basic concept is that instead of waiting for governments and international organisations to get their act together over climate change, we should do something right now," said Mr Barnard.

"If we can't reduce our own carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent in 2010, it won't really give a good start to what we need to do in the next couple of years."

Carbon footprint

Nationwide, the 10:10 campaign aims to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent in 2010.

The Steyning 10:10 group is hoping to get people living in Steyning, Upper Beeding and Bramber to take action to reduce their carbon footprint by working with local businesses, individuals and schools.

The group asked the parish council to support it in a variety of ways, including signing up to the 10:10 pledge and financial help to pay for room hire.

The group is also hoping to host a Question Time-style debate with parliamentary candidates about their stance on environmental issues.

"We have had some great enthusiastic support from members of the community, but we would appreciate even more ideas and feedback on those ideas," said Miss Goodall.
