BIRDMAN: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to fly off Worthing pier
THE magical car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang looks set to "fly" over Worthing when it takes to the skies as part of the Birdman event.
Eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, aka Lee Worsfold, will take the driving seat in the car and leap off Worthing Pier into the sea 35ft below on Sunday (July 6).
Lee is part of a team entry organised by Gleam Clean, car bodywork repairers and valeting specialists.
And, although other members of staff might not be flying, they will all be there on the day supporting him and sporting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang costumes.
Lee said: "I am a little nervous, but I have jumped off things before."
The car has been intricately made by Brian and Lynda Stickland, whose daughter, Clare Young, co-owns Gleam Clean in Southdownview Road, Broadwater, with her husband Phil.
On the day, Clare will be dressed as Grandpa Potts and Phil as the evil child catcher.
Staff member Mel Deare will join them as Truly Scrumptious.
The team will be raising money for Worthing Scope.
Clare said: "We wanted a car theme because of what we do and this seemed ideal.
"We want to raise as much money as we can for Worthing Scope."
