BIRDMAN: Worthing Birdman 2008 gets off to a flying start ~ Reader's photograph
SERIOUS "flyers" from around the world have got this weekend's International Birdman event off the a flying start.
The heavy wind and rain today (Saturday,July 5) cleared in time to allow the serious flyers in the event's Leonardo da Vinci and Condor classes to take to the skies in their incredible flying machines.
And they had one goal in their sights - to fly at least 100metres off Worthing pier to be in with a chance of scooping the 30,000 jackpot.
Unfortuntely, none of the flyers managed to fly the distance, but Ron Freeman, of Northumberland, is currently in the lead with a distance of 85.9metres.
The men and their flying machines will get one more go at hitting the jackpot tomorrow (Sunday, July 6), when they will be joined by fun flyers in the Kingfisher class during day two of the Birdman event.
Log on to the Worthing Herald website tomorrow (Sunday, July 6) for more Birdman updates and video and see next week's newspaper for an eight-page Birdman special.
