Carol Vorderman 'touched' by Worthing family's story

CAROL Vorderman said she was "touched" when she read last month's Worthing Herald story about a young autistic boy.

The former Countdown presenter got in touch with Joseph Greave's mum Clare after she saw the article on our website.

It revealed five-year-old Joseph, who is exceptionally gifted at maths, was a huge fan of the show when Carol appeared on it.

Carol's message

In the email, Carol said: "I was very touched to read about Joseph's story in the Worthing Herald.

"I read it online and it reminded me of how important Countdown has been to so many people, including Richard and I in our day."

"Could you have a think about how I might be able to help you and Joseph in some way?

"He looks so beautiful and I know how difficult life must be for you at times.

"You're obviously a fine mother. Congratulations.

"Please keep in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.

"Yours, Carol V xx

x and one for Joseph."

Sponsored walk

Clare, of Harrow Road, Worthing, spoke about what life is like with an autistic child to promote a sponsored walk she is organising.

All the money raised on the walk – from Worthing Pier to Sea Lane Caf in Goring on Sunday, June 7 – will go to the National Autistic Society.

Autism is a brain development disorder affecting social interaction and communication which can also result in children being highly gifted in certain fields.

Most autistic children are fond of routine, and so when Carol Vorderman left the quiz show, Joseph stopped watching as he did not like the change.

Clare, 32, said: "At first I thought the email might be a prank as it was so lovely and unexpected to hear from her. It is a very sweet email and it was nice of her to take the time to send it.

"She asked if there was anything she could do to help us, so I have invited her along to our walk and fingers crossed she comes."
