COMMUNITY STARS: Happy Joan is there to help
KIND, happy and always smiling.
This is how a Rustington woman described her best friend, whom she has nominated in the 2009 Herald/Gazette Community Stars awards.
Olive Beck said Joan Salmon was always willing to help others and had been very supportive to her.
Mrs Beck said: "Without hesitation, she volunteered to drive me all the way to Devon and back when my son had a serious operation.
"She is so kind and it's not just to me, it's to so many people."
Raising money
The pair met many years ago through their work with The Trefoil Guild and Rustington Methodist Church.
Mrs Beck is a committee member for the guild, which raises money for Girlguiding, and Mrs Salmon, 70, is the secretary.
Within the last year they have helped fund a tent for the Guides, as well as other equipment they need.
Mrs Beck said: "If people ever need somebody to look after their children, or need any other help, she always volunteers.
"I see her at least once a week.
"She's just a kind and happy person who's always smiling. I think she should win because she's always willing to help."
There is still time to get your nominations in for our community stars awards by using the nomination form.
We will also be printing a special supplement featuring everyone nominated in which there will be a form for people to cast their votes and help us find our winners.
The winners will be announced by TV presenter Fred Dinenage at our free awards ceremony at the Assembly Hall in Worthing on Sunday, November 1.
Pick up a Herald or Gazette on Thursday, June 25, for a nomination form.
