COMMUNITY STARS: Springfield First School nominated for award
DESCRIBED by one parent as an "outstanding" place to learn, Springfield First School has been nominated in the Herald/Gazette Community Star Awards.
Eileen Forster, whose four daughters have attended Springfield, has entered the Sackville Road-based school in the best school category.
She said her girls, Chelsea, 11, and Shannon, nine, who have now left the school, and Sophie, seven, and Kerry, five, who are both still there, had all enjoyed being Springfield pupils.
Eileen, 42, of Sackville Way, said: "They have all loved their time there. The layout of the school is very nice, the children all sit in groups, rather than face the blackboard like I used to do.
"It's very relaxed and all the children seem to be very happy there."
She added: "When my eldest daughter Sophie was younger, she had selective mutism and my husband and I tried our best, but it was Springfield that really brought her out of her shell.
"She's totally the opposite now, and if it wasn't for Springfield, that wouldn't have happened."
Wonderful place
Springfield can take up to 180 pupils and currently has 178.
There is a waiting list for pupils to get into the school, which has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted in its last three inspections.
Head teacher Valerie Lavender has been at the school since 2005 and said it was a wonderful place to work.
She said: "I'm highly delighted to be nominated as I think we are a very good school that gets better and better every year.
"We already have high standards, and have been rated by Ofsted as outstanding in the last three inspections in 2002, 2007 and 2009, but we aim to build on those standards.
"We always strive to make sure the children here are happy here. I wait at the door to meet and greet them every morning, and they always come into school very happy, which is lovely to see."
