County council refuses to comment about sudden departure of chief executive

Questions have been raised about the sudden departure of West Sussex County Council's chief executive Mark Hammond, who is on extended leave.

The council has refused to explain why Mr Hammond departed.

In a statement released on Tuesday (September 1), the county council said there was no further comments to make at this stage.

Executive director for communities, Kieran Stigant, will take on the chief executive role.

Mr Hammond, who lives in Funtington, near Chichester, took up the chief executive role six years ago.

Before becoming chief executive, he was director for environment and development at the county council.
