Democracy day at Worthing school get pupils' vote
COUNCILLORS and MPs took up the invitation to speak to Worthing schoolchildren as part of their democracy day.
The event, at Our Lady of Sion School in Gratwicke Road, was held on Thursday and was organised by the Solent People's Theatre Company.
It was intended to give children a greater understanding of democratic processes.
Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing, gave an address to pupils explaining how politics influences "everything" and talked about issues such as the traffic problems on the A27, plans for a new swimming pool in the town and the future of the Downs.
According to Judy Chambers, school press officer, councillor Ann Barlow said she was very impressed by how politically aware the pupils were about world situations and local issues and that they were not sidetracked by party politics.
Mrs Chambers said Worthing borough councillor Tom Wye said he thought the whole idea was brilliant, and he had enjoyed it more than the children.
Ann Whitchurch, director of studies, organised the day. She said: "I am thrilled with the response of all involved, and I am looking forward to building on the interest and enthusiasm the students showed."
