Durrington teenager wins coveted St John Ambulance role

A DURRINGTON youngster has been named the St John Ambulance Sussex cadet of the year.

Katie Norton was appointed to the role at the end of last month, and will spend the next year representing St John at award ceremonies, fund-raising events and at a reception at Buckingham Palace.

The 15-year-old Durrington High School pupil joined the charity at the age of six, following in the footsteps of her parents who are also members.

She said: "I'm really pleased. I was quite shocked when I heard, as I didn't really expect it.

"I am really looking forward to representing St John Ambulance over the next year."

To win the title, Katie, of Goring Road, had to take part in a number of activities which were marked by a judge.

She had to do a presentation, pitch for a TV soap featuring issues concerning young people and also had to have a uniform inspection and give an interview.

Her role means being an ambassador for St John.

In the future, she hopes her training will help her in her bid to become a doctor.

She said: "I think having a first aid qualification is important for

anyone. It's very useful and I hope it will help me in my career.

"I would encourage young people to sign up as you can meet people of your own age and make friends."
