AFTER months of protests and demonstrations, the future of Findon’s fire station and Lancing’s second engine will be considered at a West Sussex County Council meeting.

Today (Wednesday, November 10) the select committee meeting will focus on the county-wide public consultation which followed the proposed closures of fire stations in Findon, Keymer and Bosham, and remoing the second pump from Lancing retained station.

The meeting, which takes place in Chichester, at the County Hall, will hear from county fire officer Max Hood and representatives from the retained firefighters’ union.

Protest meetings have taken place in Findon and Lancing, with scores of people turning out to campaign to keep fire services.

The decision about whether to keep services running will then be placed in the hands of West Sussex County Council cabinet member for public protection, Peter Evans, who will be given two weeks to make his decision.

Councillors will then be given the final say and will vote either in favour of or against his recommendations, potentially adding another eight days to the decision process if they disagree with his proposal.

Pat Arculus, select committee chairman, said: “This is an opportunity to scrutinise the Fire and Rescue Service’s response to the consultation and make any recommendations before the cabinet member for public protection, Peter Evans, makes his final decision about the proposed improvement plan in November.”
