Firefighters join Haiti relief effort

FIREFIGHTERS from Worthing and Steyning have joined the relief effort in Haiti.

Peter Thorpe-Hinks, from Steyning, and Brian Vincent, from Worthing, are part of a specially trained UK Government response team sent to the country after the devastating earthquake which struck the island on Tuesday (January 12).

The team was on the first flight to leave from Gatwick after the runways were cleared of snow on Wednesday (January 13).

The Haiti government has appealed for international help after an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the island leaving tens of thousands dead and millions affected.

Other firefighters ready to set out include St John Stanley from Billingshurst, Chris Kemp from Horsham, Mick Lewin, from Billingshurst, and Rob Negus from Hove.

The length of the rescue mission is unknown but it could last up to 14 days.

The team was also sent to help after the Indonesian earthquake in October.

- Pupils at Chatsmore Catholic High School raised 1,230 for victims of the Haiti earthquake when they held a mufti day at their school on Friday, January 15.

Viv Porter, the school's learning resource centre manager, said it was "a great result".
