BUDDING footballers will be able to play on brand-new football pitches, thanks to a £1.4 million development.

Work began on Saturday, July 2, to build eight football pitches in Palatine Park, which will be run by Worthing Town Football Club (WTFC) on behalf of the council.

The new facility, which is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the football season in 2012, is part of a five-year football development plan to help footballers develop their skills, regardless of age, gender or ability.

The project is being funded with a grant of £453,399 from the Football Foundation – a charity funded by the Premier League, the FA and government.

The rest of the money comes from the council, WTFC, which contributed £20,000, and Viridor Credits, which contributed a further £35,000.

There will also be a coaching programme offered to the large number of people from the area who volunteer their time to coach youngsters.

Ian Stewart, chairman of Worthing Town FC, said: “When completed, this facility will be a fantastic place for football players, young and old, male and female, to enjoy playing our national sport.

“We will seek to provide the very best football experience for these players, encouraging more of them to participate and retaining them in the sport for longer.”
