Fund-raising in Worthing as firefighter comes back from Haiti rescue mission
FIREFIGHTER Brian Vincent is due to come home to Worthing today (Friday, January 22)after taking part in the rescue mission in Haiti.
Brian Vincent was one of six West Sussex firefighters, from the county's Technical Rescue Unit (TRU) in Horley, who flew to the Caribbean country which was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale on Tuesday, January 12.
The West Sussex team were in charge of the logistics of the UK rescue operation, which includes 58 other UK firefighters, but the extent of the disaster has meant they have had to pitch in with hands-on rescue operations.
Gary Towson, spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue, said: He added: "I do think we should be proud that West Sussex firefighters are able to play such a key role in a huge international disaster.
"It just shows the changing role in the UK firefighters are given. It is not just fires and car crashes – we have to be prepared and trained for everything."
The team's success stories include rescuing a two-year-old girl, who spent three days trapped in the rubble from a collapsed building in the capital, a 60-year-old man after a seven hour rescue operation, and a 40-year-old woman who took four hours to reach.
Street collection for Haiti
To help raise funds for the victims of the earthquake, the Rotary Clubs in Worthing are collecting in Montague Street on Saturday (January 23).
Rotarians across the county have been collecting cash for ShelterBoxes.
Each box costs 500 and includes a 10-man tent, essential foods, tools and water purifiers.
They are designed to keep a family of 10 alive for at least six months.
Anyone who would like to donate directly to the ShelterBox appeal can call 0300 0300 500 or visit www.shelterbox.org
