A HUGE crowd turned out to pay their respects to victims of the two World Wars at the Remembrance Sunday service in Worthing.

Thousands of people gathered in Chapel Road to watch a march-past at the war memorial, before joining in with a two-minute silence.

The service was led by the mayor’s chaplain, Revd Peter Irwin-Clark of St Mary’s Church, Broadwater. The first wreaths in memory of the fallen were laid by mayor Ann Barlow and the high sheriff of West Sussex, David Tupper.

Retired bandsman Lawrie South, 85, laid a wreath on behalf of The Salvation Army. Lawrie was a parachutist with the 1st Airborne Division who, in the Second World War, was among those that liberated Norway in May 1945 under the code name Apostle.

A parade was then led by three serving Royal Marines and soldiers from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, based in Brighton, who are due to fly to Afghanistan next week.

On Saturday (November 12), a remembrance service was held at the Cross of Sacrifice in Broadwater Cemetery, in South Farm Road, and in Ferring, St Andrew’s Church was overflowing at Sunday’s remembrance service.
