Gap to fill in on fun

FROM August 3 families are invited to join National Trust wardens at Birling Gap for a week of fun activities to celebrate the weird and wonderful creatures found beneath the Sussex waves.

The National Trust has teamed up with Natural England for this event, as part of a campaign to highlight the amazing marine life found just off our coastline.

The campaign focuses on 'undersea landscapes' and will feature maps that show undersea features and their inhabitants such as the great sand hills of the Dogger Bank, the sponge and anemone beds on the gravel banks in the Channel, and the underwater gorge of the Lune Deep off Morecambe Bay in Lancashire.

The campaign aims to show people that there is a stunning, rich diversity of marine life that lives in unusual and exquisite habitats just beyond our shores such as seagrass meadows, kelp forests, pink sea fan forests, brittlestar beds and more.

Throughout the week children can make a seahorse pencil top, a cuttlefish finger puppet, a lobster door guard and a south east undersea portal to take home.

There will also be lots of information on hand about these mysterious marine creatures.

Activities will be held at Birling Gap, August 3-8, midday to 4pm. Activities are free, but donations are welcome. No booking is required.

In addition to the undersea landscapes arts and crafts, there will be specific themed events running everyday from 1pm to 3.30pm:

August 3: Super Seaweed. Find out how versatile, useful and amazing seaweed really is.

August 4: Rockpool Adventure. Take a look at the magnificent world of rock pools.

August 5: Undersea Landscapes Arts and Crafts.

August 6: Marine Litter Art Attack. Take part in a litter clean of the beach, and then create a sea monster from the things you find. Display by local artist Lou McCurdy, of her 'marine litter art' work.

August 7: Historical shipwrecks.
