GCSE delight at Davison, Worthing High and St Andrew's
THE agonising wait was finally over for thousands of year 11 students across Worthing today (Thursday, August 21) when the time finally came to open their GCSE results.
Nervous students from Davison, Worthing High, St Andrew's, Durrington High, Chatsmore and Our Lady of Sion received their long-awaited results — with many schools celebrating record pass rates.
At Davison, in Selborne Road, East Worthing, 70 per cent of the girls got A* to C grades, with 98.5 per cent passing overall.
Della West, the head teacher, said: "We are very pleased and relieved. The girls and the staff have worked so hard."
Delighted Kirsty Biss achieved seven A*s, one A and a B. She said: "I wasn't expecting these results. I am very relieved."
Kirsty is going to do A-levels at Worthing College.
Naomi Maurice got five A*s and five As.
Vicky Smith got one A*, five As and five Bs and she is going to Worthing College. Joining her at college is her friend, Becca Markland, who got five A*s, four As, one B and one C.
Lucie Gleeson was awarded one A*, four As, three Bs and two Cs. She said: "I am really pleased. We are going out to celebrate tonight."
Lucie is going to do A-levels at Worthing College.
Gemma Gear got two As, three Bs and five Cs. Her friend, Abi Barrow, achieved six Bs and five Cs.
Sophie Parker hobbled in to collect her all-important envelope wearing a plaster cast.
The 16-year-old, from Durrington, said: "I was cheerleading and I fell over. I can't really walk on it. The plaster's on for six weeks."
Sophie was delighted with her results — two A*s, in PE and maths, as well as seven As and two Bs, and will continue her studies in September.
"I am really pleased with my results," said Sophie. "I'm excited. I'm going to Worthing College to study statistics, history, PE and psychology A-levels."
Lily Deans got Cs and Bs. She is going to BHASVIC in Brighton.
Victoria Avery achieved three Cs, five Ds and one G. She is planning on re-taking maths and science at college.
Worthing High
Over at Worthing High in South Farm Road, 60 per cent of students achieved five or more A* to C grades.
The school has really improved in recent years and the GCSE grades have risen by almost 20 per cent in the past four years.
An impressive 100 per cent of students passed biology, closely followed by 96 per cent in chemistry and physics. English gained a 58 per cent pass with maths at 55 per cent and statistics at 95 per cent.
History gained 80 per cent, art gained a 70 per cent pass rate and business and communication got 66 per cent.
Alison Beer, the head teacher, said: "The school's results were well deserved following a significant amount of work by both staff and students. All of the additional work given by staff in terms of mentoring and coaching has been particularly successful which is very gratifying."
A tearful Catherine Rowland was overwhelmed with eight A*s and four As. She said: "I knew I would be crying." She is going to do A-levels at Worthing College.
Samuel Williams got eight A*s, three As and one B.
Sophie Van Eetvelt, a talented singer and dancer, achieved three A*s and nine As. She is going to BHASVIC.
Peter Humphreys got four A*s, five As and one B.
Daniel Curtis was awarded three A*s, four As and four Bs.
Jasmin Samaras achieved five A*s, five As and one B. She said: "The walk here was horrible as it was raining. That didn't help the mood. I am so happy with my results." Her boyfriend, Dale McGilvray, got three As, four Bs and five Cs. Both are going to Chichester College.
Elizabeth Anderson-Easey got two A*s, four As and five Bs. She is going to Worthing College.
Rhiannon Haworth got six As, five Bs and one C. She is going to Chichester College.
Joshua Holmes was awarded two A*s, seven As and two Bs.
Daniel Bartlett achieved one A*, three As, six Bs and two Cs.
Vicky Quaife was pleased with one A, eight Bs and three Cs and is going to do A-levels at Worthing College.
Michaela Oldfield was not expecting her three As, four Bs and five Cs. Her friend, Anthony Way, got two As, four Bs, four Cs and one D.
St Andrew's
St Andrew's in Sackville Road, Broadwater, achieved its best ever results, with 64 per cent of students getting five or more passes at grade C or above.
Steve Jewell, the head teacher, said: "I am very pleased with our GCSE results this year and congratulate students and staff on their achievements. These are our best results ever and show a massive increase on last year. We have improved by at least five per cent every year for the past four years.
"The hard work, smaller classes, holiday revision sessions and reduced study leave have all paid off. I wish our students well in their careers and college courses."
Samuel Baker was beaming from ear-to-ear after finding out he had scooped an impressive 10 A*s and two As. After ringing his mum to tell her the good news, he said: "I didn't think I would get these results, but I had hoped as I worked really hard." Samuel is going to do A-levels at BHASVIC.
Tim Calderhead was equally pleased with four A*s, seven As and two Bs.
Rikesh Gungah achieved two A*s, six As and two Bs. He is going to BHASVIC.
Luke Palmer achieved five As and six Bs. And David Stewart got four As, one B and Cs.
