THE future of Worthing’s only fully functional windmill has been saved, thanks to a surge of new volunteers.

Alarm bells were raised when members of the High Salvington Windmill Trust realised the number of volunteers needed to help maintain the mill were dwindling.

The numbers were so low, the trust’s annual summer fête had to be cancelled – the main fund-raiser for the mill each year.

In desperation, chairman Bob Potts contacted the Herald and called an open meeting to encourage volunteers to come along. He was thrilled when more than 100 people turned up in support of the cause.

He said: “We had a brilliant turn-out for the meeting, and from it more than 50 volunteers came forward. It means now our summer fête will be going ahead, which is brilliant.”

High Salvington Mill is dated back to 1750, and has served a number of functions, including a tea room and an estate agents. The trust is in charge of the maintenance of the mill, and runs guided tours and open days during the spring and summer.

Bob said: “We have people who have come forward to help with a range of jobs, from running our gift shop to maintaining the ground the mill stands in. Some people have shown an interest in giving guided tours and helping us maintain the structure, and we will be training them in the coming weeks.”

He added: “It is brilliant we have so many new volunteers. The mill is a piece of our local history and it should be maintained. Now, thankfully, we will be able to keep it running for the foreseeable future.”

The mill summer fête is planned for Sunday, July 8.
